Garden Vegetable Rhymes

Custom book "If I Were A Garden" by Michigan author and artist Richard Rensberry. Illustrated by Mary Rensberry.

We created this garden vegetable rhyme to help kids on the road to developing a taste for healthy vegetables.  It doesn't always come natural when kids have no idea what a vegetable is or where it comes from.  For city kids it comes from the grocery store instead of soil and lots of work and care.

Establishing communication through rhyme is a way to raise affinity and reality for vegetables as something fun to grow and eat.  Kids love to get their hands dirty in the garden and the kitchen.

Home vegetable gardens and growing vegetables is an experience every child should be exposed to at a young age.  As a parent or grandparent, I would devote some time to a vegetable garden for kids.

Garden Vegetables

In my home State of Michigan, growing and harvesting garden vegetables is mostly relegated to spring, summer and autumn.   In some parts of the country, however, year around gardens are the norm.  Seeds can be started indoors for school projects and then transplanted outdoors into a community garden that can be overseen by a 4-H or garden club.  The kids can also take their sprouted plants home and start a nice vegetable garden of their own.

Autumn is often the time for harvesting many varieties of garden vegetables and fruits for eating and preserving.  Home and school gardening projects surrounding these activities start to give children solid grounding on where their food is derived and all the work and care that goes into producing their french fries.  Growing and eating raw vegetables straight out of the garden is in itself a great educational opportunity for building skills and responsibility.   Kids love to help, and these activities are a source of pride and accomplishment.
